As another example of his role as catalyst, I vividly remember visiting him in Oxford circa 1984, and giving a talk where he basically made up the audience, with at most two or three other people (another sign of his availability and willingness to listen to the ideas of others, however busy he may have been with both research and management activities). The background is that I had published a programming treatise and textbook in French in 1978, which I showed to him on the occasion of the summer school, upon which he immediately said that I should publish a translation in his Prentice Hall series. When I asked if he knew a translator he replied that I should do the translation myself, which I accepted, foolishly since the obvious happened: instead of translating I started to produce something completely new, part of which I was presenting on that day in Oxford. To explain what I was doing in logic-driven software architecture I looked for a good metaphor and, on the spot, proposed that there was a kind of “contract” between caller and callee. He did not say anything, but his mere presence had enabled me to make my incipient ideas jell. Many people could cite similar experiences.
